Devotional: Come to Jesus

Devotionals by Chris Jordan

Come to me, all you that are weary and carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28).

Life is hard, and it can be overwhelming at times. As I write these words, the sky is grey and dark, covered by clouds that are pouring out rain upon the ground, and it is cold. Finding myself both mentally and emotionally exhausted – having battled loneliness and isolation for months-I laid down on the cold, hard bed in my prison cell and closed my eyes. And as the Holy Spirit brought to my remembrance the above words of Jesus, I simply prayed, “Jesus, I receive your rest.” And I did!

When we are weary, worried, anxious or fearful, how do we come to Jesus? I have found two keys to be helpful in my life.

One is to pray. I don’t mean to just say your prayers, but rather to get alone in the secret place of your prayer closet and pour out your heart to Jesus. Cast all of your anxiety and cares on him, because he cares for you (1 Peter 5:7).

Two is to get into the Bible. Specifically, read through the four Gospels that tell the story of the life and teachings of Jesus. Watch him as he receives all who come to him, and grants them peace, salvation, forgiveness and healing. Because the more you get to know Jesus, the more you will trust him. He is a Good Shepherd! Come to him today and let him lead you beside the still waters of his presence, and let him restore your soul.
